Standard Corrosion Tests

Posted by Elaine Spitz on Dec 8, 2014 1:46:00 PM

In the packaging industry, as in any industry, it is sometimes necessary to perform tests of the validity of the product options. For packaging, the ideal tests would come from real world situations and many tests do. Of course, that is not always possible, which is why throughout the years, many standard tests have been developed and some have even been refined (which requires testing tests). ASTM International (formerly the American Society for Testing and Materials), ISO, militaries and other organizations keep track of these standard tests and suggest the standard approach for performing them. Many testing companies also add on to these standards or adjust them slightly for their own testing purposes.

Boston's Time Capsule - Contents Preserved with Copper: Part Two

Posted by Elaine Spitz on Nov 3, 2014 1:40:00 PM

Read part one

The objects inside the 1901 time capsule found in a wooden lion sculpture at the historic state house in Boston were finally examined after having been brought to a climate-controlled room.  Members of the Bostonian Historical Society were on hand to inspect the contents with the delicacy, scrutiny and context only historians can provide. Brian LeMay, President of the BHS, told NPRs Audie Cornish, “The striking thing about the contents is how good condition they seem to be. So the stuff inside of it seems to be brand-new. It's as if it was put in there yesterday and has somehow reached us from a century ago in exactly the same condition that it is now."

Corrosion - It's Natural

Posted by Elaine Spitz on Apr 2, 2014 11:53:00 AM

Corrosion can be explained as a natural phenomenon, however, we still need to understand how best to keep products, machinery, electronics, parts small and large, safe from corrosion, rust and degradation. This quick video is rich with information:

Intercept Packaging Protection - Creative Uses at Home - Patio Table

Posted by Elaine Spitz on Aug 23, 2013 4:58:00 PM

There was a sharp explosive popping sound, then all the food and dishes caved through the outdoor table crashing onto the deck proceeded by the shattered glass. After a loud collective gasp, it took a moment for everyone to digest what had just happened. We all checked each other to verify that no one was hurt, and then preceded to the messy cleanup.

Top Two Corrosion Definitions

Posted by Joe Spitz on Jun 19, 2012 11:33:00 AM

As we approach the warmer, moister summer months, when corrosion is more prevalent, let’s address this simple question: “what is corrosion?” I spent an evening browsing the web for corrosion definitions, some were specific, some in the middle with regard to complexity, and some broader and more profound. Here are two of my favorites:

Packaging for Disaster - Intercept Packaging Field Test

Posted by Elaine Spitz on Mar 28, 2012 11:30:00 AM

Today's post is by guest writer Albert Greenhut of Engineered Materials, Inc..

There is field testing and then there are tests in the field.

At the Intercept Technology Group, we have run all our products through the gamut of industry-recognized tests. Our materials have performed well in these tests, but as a consumer I always keep a wary eye on the fine print, as all wise consumers should. Being familiar with these tests I can say that they are tough, but nothing compares to the real life tests.

We got a call from a guitar player in Thailand, telling us about a set of circumstances that wound up being an extreme field test for Intercept Technology packaging

6 Steps to Creating a Rust Inhibition Program

Posted by Joe Spitz on Dec 14, 2011 8:18:00 AM

Liberty Packaging’s Recommended 6 Steps to Placement of Rust Inhibition Program

 1. Know that nature is fluid:  Where man’s understanding is derived from categorizing, nature is fluid and sometimes unpredictable. The atmosphere is ever changing.  Sure, in general, there are corrosive areas where it becomes more difficult for companies to ship and store, but that cannot always be predicted.
    Dramatic events such as:
volcanos, tsunamis, earthquakes, wind storms, and hurricanes
along with the understated variations such as:
temperature changes, humidity, dew point changes, seasonal vegetation decay
and man’s contributions to the atmospheric change with:
    emission releases and landfill placements
All can increase the amount of dust, soot, and corrosive gases in the atmosphere ready to rust your hard earned products. For this reason unanticipated problems may occur in areas where your company may have shipped previously without problems. If your product has value to you and your customer, prepare for the worst.
