Standard Corrosion Tests

Posted by Elaine Spitz on Dec 8, 2014 1:46:00 PM

In the packaging industry, as in any industry, it is sometimes necessary to perform tests of the validity of the product options. For packaging, the ideal tests would come from real world situations and many tests do. Of course, that is not always possible, which is why throughout the years, many standard tests have been developed and some have even been refined (which requires testing tests). ASTM International (formerly the American Society for Testing and Materials), ISO, militaries and other organizations keep track of these standard tests and suggest the standard approach for performing them. Many testing companies also add on to these standards or adjust them slightly for their own testing purposes.

A Packaging Change? Here's Joe Spitz to Guide You...

Posted by Elaine Spitz on Jan 29, 2014 10:52:00 AM

As JFK famously stated: "Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or present, are certain to miss the future." During my 18 years in the packaging business, I've watched companies large and small deal with change. It's sometimes easy, often challenging, and the individuals charged with change implementation feel the weight of responsibility to their company and co-workers to get it done right. After all, why make a change, if it doesn't make your business more efficient, with less waste and more savings to the bottom line? The rewards of well-considered change are clear.

The Packaging of Punxsutawney Phil

Posted by Elaine Spitz on Mar 9, 2013 3:16:00 PM

This year the ground hog, Punxsutawney Phil, Seer of Seers, Sage of Sages, Prognosticator of Prognosticators and Weather Prophet Extraordinary (his actual full name, I am a sucker for formality) pronounced loud and clear, “Get ready for an early spring!” I was happy to hear this. The sportsman in me is begging to get outdoors after several months of being relegated to four walls of my apartment, with the occasional reprieve to the gym or the ski slopes. I am sure I am not the only one.

Packaging Electricity in South Africa

Posted by Elaine Spitz on Jun 29, 2012 12:39:00 PM

Today's post by intrepid and well-traveled blogger Albert Greenhut of Engineered Materials Inc., Chicago, IL

Kimberley, South Africa (home to the original DeBeers mine) was the second city in the world to have electricity, first installed in 1881. South Africa, more specifically Johannesburg, is now in an interesting position regarding electricity.

Fast forward to today. South Africa is the biggest consumer of electricity on the African continent, at 215 billion kWh (kilowatt hours) consumed each year, twice as much as Egypt consumes, 104 billion kWh, as of 2011. With an ever growing population and the biggest economic engine in Africa, these demands are surely on the rise.
